Description

Houttuynia cordata is a widespread East Asian and Himalayan herb with a very large GBIF dataset of nearly 18000 records spanning Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam and Thailand, together with numerous naturalised and cultivated occurrences in Europe and North America. It grows in moist and wet places, along streamsides, ditches, marsh margins, wet meadows and shaded forest floors, from the lowlands up to around 2500 m. The illustrated plants from the Tista valley in Sikkim/India at 1900 m and from Doroli in the Helambu region of Nepal at 1850 m, both flowering in May, are typical of its damp, shaded montane habitats in the Himalaya.

It is a rhizomatous perennial herb emitting a strong fish-like odour when bruised. The slender rhizomes creep underground, giving rise to erect, simple or sparingly branched stems. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate-cordate with a deeply cordate base, an acuminate apex, an entire margin and palmate venation, often tinged red beneath, and the petiole base is sheathing with a membranous stipule. The minute, perianthless flowers are densely crowded on a short terminal spike that is subtended by four (occasionally more) showy, petaloid white involucral bracts, giving the whole structure the appearance of a single flower. Each tiny flower has three stamens and a one-locular ovary of fused carpels; the fruit is a small capsule with numerous seeds.

Houttuynia cordata is one of only a few genera in the small basal angiosperm family Saururaceae (order Piperales). It is widely used as a culinary herb and in traditional medicine across East Asia, and the variegated forms are popular ornamentals. It spreads vigorously by its creeping rhizomes, forming clonal colonies, and can become weedy where introduced. It is exceedingly common and of least conservation concern.

Description

Hoya obcordata is an epiphytic climber of the eastern Himalayan foothills and adjacent subtropical forests, documented from north-east India and Bhutan, with collections also referable to lowland Nepal. It is poorly recorded, GBIF holding only five georeferenced occurrences, reflecting both its restricted range and the difficulty of collecting canopy epiphytes. It grows as a twining liana or root-climber on tree trunks and rocks in humid broad-leaved and riverine forest at low elevations. The plant from Sabha Khola in eastern Nepal at 550 m in May occupies just such a warm, humid valley floor, flowering in the late dry season.

It is a glabrous, somewhat succulent vine with slender twining stems rooting adventitiously at the nodes and exuding milky latex. The leaves are opposite, thick and fleshy, obovate to obcordate with a notched or rounded apex (whence obcordata) and shortly petiolate. The flowers are borne in pendent, umbelliform cymes from extra-axillary peduncles, each umbel of many small star-shaped blooms. The corolla is rotate and five-lobed, pale and reflexed, surmounted by the fleshy five-parted corona typical of Hoya around the gynostegium of fused stamens and stigma. The pollen forms waxy pollinia, and the fruit is a slender paired follicle releasing comose, wind-dispersed seeds.

Hoya belongs to subfamily Asclepiadoideae of an expanded Apocynaceae, defined by the gynostegium, corona and pollinium-bearing flowers formerly placed in Asclepiadaceae. H. obcordata is among the less collected Himalayan members of this largely Malesian genus, and its scarcity in herbaria leaves its full distribution imperfectly known. Such epiphytes are vulnerable to lowland deforestation, and the species would merit targeted survey to clarify its conservation status.

Description

Hydrangea febrifuga, long familiar under the name Dichroa febrifuga, is a widely distributed shrub of subtropical and warm-temperate Asia, ranging from the Himalaya (Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, northeast India) eastward through southern China, Myanmar, Thailand and Indochina to Malesia and the Philippines. It inhabits moist, shaded forest, ravines and streamsides, forming part of the evergreen broad-leaved understorey. It is recorded from low to mid elevations; the populations shown above Yoksam in Sikkim at 2,300 m in August and at Laprak in the Gorkha region of Nepal at 2,000 m in May span its typical mid-montane range in humid forest.

The plant is an erect, much-branched shrub with subquadrangular, often purplish young stems. The leaves are opposite, elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, with a serrate margin, acuminate apex and a glabrous to sparsely pubescent surface. The inflorescence is a terminal or axillary corymbose to paniculate cyme bearing numerous small bisexual flowers; the calyx is shortly toothed and the corolla blue to violet or whitish with thick, valvate petals, the stamens conspicuous. Distinctively for the family, the fruit is a fleshy, indigo-blue berry crowned by the persistent calyx and containing many minute seeds.

Molecular phylogenetic work has shown the segregate genus Dichroa to be nested within Hydrangea, prompting the recombination as Hydrangea febrifuga by De Smet and Granados; the basionym traces to Loureiro's original description of Lourea. The species is of long-standing ethnomedical importance: its roots and leaves, rich in the alkaloid febrifugine, have been used in traditional Chinese and Himalayan medicine against malaria and fevers, a property reflected in the epithet. It remains common and is not considered threatened.

Description

Hymenidium benthamii is a robust alpine umbellifer of the high Himalaya, distributed through Nepal, China, India, Myanmar and Bhutan (gbif_countries: NP, CN, IN, MM, BT), with about 181 GBIF occurrences. It grows in alpine meadows, damp grassy slopes, rocky pastures and streamside flushes above the treeline, where it is a characteristic herb of the moist eastern Himalayan uplands. The illustrated collections span Jule-Tso in Bhutan at about 4150 m, flowering in June, and Dzongri in Sikkim at about 3900 m in August, documenting its occupation of the cool subalpine to alpine zone through the monsoon season.

The plant is a stout perennial arising from a thickened taproot and crown, with erect, ribbed, often hollow stems. The leaves are largely basal, long-petiolate and two- to three-times pinnately divided into toothed or further-dissected segments, the petioles sheathing at the base. The inflorescence is a large, flat-topped compound umbel subtended by a conspicuous involucre of broad, often membranous-margined bracts, a feature recalling the genus name Hymenidium; the small flowers are white to pinkish with five petals. The fruit is a dry schizocarp splitting into two ribbed mericarps, the ridges and oil-canals (vittae) providing key taxonomic characters.

Long known under Pleurospermum benthamii, the species, as the wp_link itself preserves, has been transferred to Hymenidium following revisionary work that dismembered the broadly construed Pleurospermum on molecular grounds. It belongs to the conspicuous-bracted alpine Apiaceae of the Sino-Himalaya, a group much used in regional ethnomedicine. Widespread across its montane range, it is of no conservation concern.

Description

Hypericum choisianum (correctly H. choisyanum) is a handsome shrubby St John's wort of the Himalaya, distributed from Nepal eastward through India, Sikkim, Bhutan and into southwestern China, with outlying records from Myanmar; cultivated and naturalised material accounts for occurrences in Britain, Ireland and Vietnam, contributing to a GBIF total of over two hundred records. It inhabits open temperate forest, forest margins, scrub, banks and rocky slopes, typically between about 1800 and 3600 m. The plants documented from Luksor in Bhutan at 2800 m in July and from the Tista valley in Sikkim at 3400 m in August reflect both its broad elevational tolerance and its mid-to-late summer flowering, when the large golden blooms are conspicuous along forest edges and clearings throughout the monsoon season.

The plant is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub of one to two metres, with arching reddish branches and opposite, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, sessile or clasping leaves that are slightly glaucous beneath and dotted with translucent glands. The flowers are large and showy, solitary or few in terminal cymes, with five broad, bright golden-yellow petals that are often somewhat incurved to give a cupped, almost globose bloom. The numerous stamens are united into five fascicles, and the styles are five, free and spreading. The superior, five-locular ovary develops into a leathery to slightly fleshy capsule that dehisces to release many small seeds; the glandular tissue throughout the plant contains the characteristic hypericin and related compounds.

Hypericum, here placed in the Hypericaceae (sometimes treated within a broadly defined Clusiaceae), reaches notable diversity in the Sino-Himalaya, and H. choisyanum belongs to the large-flowered shrubby section Ascyreia, several members of which are valued as garden ornamentals for their bold yellow flowers and hardiness. Described by N. Robson, who monographed the genus, it is part of a closely allied complex of Himalayan shrubs distinguished by subtle differences in leaf shape, stamen fascicles and capsule form. As a common, ecologically adaptable species spanning a wide range and elevation, it is of no conservation concern, and its frequency along disturbed forest margins reflects considerable tolerance of moderate human modification.

Description

Hypoestes triflora is a broadly distributed paleotropical herb ranging from tropical and southern Africa across the Arabian Peninsula to the Himalaya and southwestern China; its roughly 2040 GBIF records show a strong African centre in South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon and the Congo basin, with Asian outliers in India, Nepal and China. In the western Himalaya it reaches the mid-montane zone, as in the collection near Juphal in West Nepal at about 2600 m in July, flowering during the monsoon. It grows in shaded, moist situations on forest floors and streambanks, as a soft-stemmed understorey herb of seasonally wet temperate and subtropical woodland.

The plant is an erect to straggling herb with four-angled, swollen-noded stems rooting at the lower joints. The opposite leaves are ovate to lanceolate, thin-textured and acuminate, with entire to obscurely toothed margins. The flowers are grouped in small axillary clusters, each subtended by bracts and typically containing three flowers, as the epithet records. The bilabiate corolla is pale pink to lilac or purplish, with a slender tube and deeply two-lipped limb. The fruit is an explosively dehiscent club-shaped capsule that ejects its seeds from retinacula-bearing placentae.

Within Acanthaceae, Hypoestes is allied to Justicia and recognised by its bracteate flower clusters and two-locular capsules; H. triflora is among the most wide-ranging species, its disjunct African-Asian distribution reflecting historical connections across the paleotropics. As a common woodland herb spanning many countries, it is of no particular conservation concern.

Description

Hypoxis aurea Lour. is a small cormous geophyte of the Hypoxidaceae with a wide Asian and Pacific distribution, recorded from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and China through Taiwan, Japan and Korea, across Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines) to New Guinea, with around 1,240 georeferenced occurrences. It grows in open, well-lit grassy habitats: hill grassland, open pine and oak woodland, pasture, terrace banks and disturbed slopes, often in seasonally moist soils. The photographed plants from Num at about 1,650 m and from the Lara-Lake area of West Nepal at about 2,900 m, flowering in May and June, show its broad altitudinal span from subtropical foothills to the lower-temperate zone in the Himalaya.

It is a perennial herb arising from a small ovoid to tuberous corm. The leaves are all basal, several, narrowly linear and grass-like, often keeled and clothed (especially toward the base) in long soft hairs. The flowers are borne singly or few together on slender scapes shorter than or about equalling the leaves; each has six spreading yellow tepals, golden within and frequently greenish and hairy on the outer surface, with six stamens and an inferior, hairy ovary. The fruit is a small capsule opening to release numerous tiny black, often muricate seeds.

Hypoxis is a chiefly tropical and warm-temperate genus of grassland geophytes, and its members are well adapted to fire and seasonal drought through the perennating corm, which resprouts after burning or dry-season dormancy. The yellow, pollen-rich, nectarless flowers attract pollen-gathering insects. Widely distributed and frequently associated with grazed and disturbed grassland, H. aurea is common across its range and not considered threatened.

Description

Ilex dipyrena, the Himalayan holly, is an evergreen tree or large shrub distributed along the Himalaya from Pakistan and northern India through Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan into southern China (Yunnan, Xizang) and Myanmar. It is a characteristic constituent of cool temperate broad-leaved and mixed conifer forest, growing on shaded slopes, ridges and forest margins. It occurs mainly between about 1,800 and 3,300 m; the plant recorded in the Phobjikha valley of Bhutan at 3,100 m in April lies in the upper part of this band, within the moist temperate forest belt where it forms part of the evergreen understorey.

The plant is a small to medium-sized tree with greyish bark and glabrous twigs. The leaves are alternate, leathery and glossy dark green, elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, with a spinose-dentate margin bearing rigid marginal teeth on vigorous shoots, the teeth often reduced on older growth. The plant is dioecious, with small greenish-white, four-merous flowers clustered in the leaf axils. The fruit is a globose drupe ripening dull red, containing typically two pyrenes, a feature reflected in the epithet dipyrena, distinguishing it from the four- to five-seeded common holly.

Ilex is a large, near-cosmopolitan genus and the sole member of its family. Ilex dipyrena, described by Wallich, is the principal native holly of the Himalaya and a long-cultivated ornamental and parent of garden hybrids. Its evergreen, drupe-bearing habit provides food for birds, which disperse the seeds, and it contributes to the structure of temperate Himalayan forest. The species is widespread and common, and is not considered to be of conservation concern.

Description

Impatiens cymbifera Hook.f. is a Sino-Himalayan balsam distributed across Nepal, China, India, Bhutan and Myanmar (NP, CN, IN, BT, MM), with GBIF recording about 103 occurrences. It is a plant of cool, humid montane forest, favouring shaded streamsides, seepage slopes, moist rock faces and path margins. The material photographed at the Cluning-Khola in Nepal at 2900 m in October reflects its autumn flowering in the temperate forest belt, where late-monsoon moisture sustains its succulent growth and prolongs anthesis into the post-monsoon season.

It is an erect, succulent annual with translucent, often reddish, watery stems swollen at the nodes and rooting below. The leaves are alternate, ovate to elliptic with a serrate margin bearing small stipitate glands at the base, and an acuminate apex. The flowers are borne singly or few in the leaf axils on slender pedicels, the corolla zygomorphic; the lower sepal is conspicuously enlarged into a boat-shaped (cymbiform, hence the epithet) saccate body abruptly contracted into an incurved spur, while the lateral united petals form two-lobed wings. The capsule is the characteristic clavate, explosively dehiscent fruit of the genus, scattering seeds by elastic recoil of the valves.

Within the large and intricate genus Impatiens, a centre of diversity in the Sino-Himalayan region, I. cymbifera belongs to the forest-dwelling annuals with strongly saccate lower sepals. Its flowers are pollinated by long-tongued insects, and explosive ballistic seed dispersal aids colonisation of moist disturbed ground. As a moisture-demanding annual it is tied to intact montane forest hydrology, and such balsams indicate undisturbed humid forest.

Impatiens discolor is an annual herb of the eastern Himalaya and adjoining ranges, documented by GBIF from Nepal, India, Bhutan, China, Thailand and Papua New Guinea across roughly 78 occurrences, several records being indeterminate as to country. It favours shaded, humid montane forest, growing along stream banks, in moist gullies and on seepage-fed roadside banks within evergreen and mixed broad-leaved woodland, typically at middle elevations. The photographed plant from Tongsa (Trongsa) in central Bhutan at about 2100 m, flowering in June with the onset of the monsoon, is typical of the warm, wet conditions that the genus exploits during the rainy season.

The plant has a succulent, translucent, often reddish stem that is erect or ascending and watery in texture, with swollen nodes. The leaves are alternate, ovate to elliptic, with a serrate or crenate-serrate margin and an acuminate apex, frequently glaucous or paler beneath, giving the discolorous appearance referenced by the epithet. The zygomorphic flowers are borne singly or in few-flowered axillary clusters; the lower sepal forms a saccate spur, and the showy yellow corolla (sometimes spotted) is built from a standard and two lateral united petals. The fruit is a fleshy, club-shaped capsule that dehisces explosively, the valves coiling abruptly to fling the seeds well away from the parent.

Balsaminaceae are notoriously taxonomically difficult, with Impatiens hyper-diverse and richly speciose in the Sino-Himalaya, where rapid radiation has produced many narrowly distributed, ecologically specialised taxa. Explosive seed dispersal and dependence on insect pollinators, together with a strictly annual life cycle, tie the species closely to seasonal monsoon moisture. While not formally assessed as threatened, the group's fine-scale habitat specificity makes individual populations sensitive to forest disturbance and altered rainfall regimes.
