Description

Bergenia ciliata (Haw.) Sternb. is a robust rosette-forming perennial widely distributed through the Himalaya from Pakistan and Afghanistan eastward across India, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan into south-west China. It is a characteristic plant of shaded, moist rock crevices, cliff ledges, stream banks and boulder-strewn slopes in the temperate forest belt, generally between about 1500 and 3000 m. The photographed gatherings span this range, from Gunda in the Gorkha region of Nepal at 1700 m and Honggaon at 2360 m up to Lachen in northern Sikkim at 2800 m, flowering in May and June. It favours cool, humid, semi-shaded microsites with seepage and good drainage, often forming extensive colonies on damp rock.

The plant arises from a stout, fleshy, creeping rhizome bearing the persistent remains of old leaf bases. The leaves are large, obovate to broadly elliptic, rounded and shortly toothed at the margin, and notably ciliate-hairy on both surfaces and margin (the basis of the epithet ciliata), distinguishing it from the glabrous-leaved B. purpurascens. The leafless scape carries a branched cymose panicle of showy flowers; the five petals are white to pale pink, broadly obovate, set off by a reddish calyx and conspicuous stamens, opening often before the new foliage is fully expanded. The fruit is a two-lobed capsule containing numerous small seeds.

Within Saxifragaceae the genus Bergenia is a small Asian group, and B. ciliata is one of its most widespread members, intergrading with relatives where ranges overlap. The thick rhizome ("pashanbhed") is important in Ayurvedic and folk medicine, valued for treating urinary calculi, which has led to heavy wild harvesting. Though not globally threatened, localised over-collection and habitat disturbance make sustainable management of this medicinally prized saxifrage a conservation concern.

Description

Bergenia purpurascens is a robust perennial of the high Himalaya and adjacent mountains, native to China, Nepal, India, Bhutan and Myanmar, and represented in cultivation across Europe and North America, where naturalised or garden-derived records inflate its GBIF tally to nearly a thousand occurrences. In the wild it is a plant of the alpine and upper subalpine belt, growing on rocky slopes, cliff ledges, moist meadows and the margins of rhododendron scrub. Field records illustrate this altitudinal range well: Sikkim at Yumthang around 3600 m in June, the Ludlow-Sherriff-Trail near Warrtlang-La in Bhutan at some 4500 m in June, and Kishong in West Bengal at about 3700 m in May.

The plant arises from a stout, woody, creeping rhizome bearing a basal rosette of large, leathery, obovate to elliptic leaves; these are glabrous, with entire to obscurely toothed margins and prominent reticulate venation, frequently flushing deep red or purple in autumn and cold exposure. The flowering scape is erect, reddish and glandular, terminating in a dense, nodding cyme. The flowers are showy, with five purple-red to magenta petals, a campanulate calyx of fleshy, often purplish sepals, ten stamens, and a bicarpellate ovary. The fruit is a capsule splitting to release numerous small seeds.

Described by Engler on the basis of Hooker and Thomson's material, B. purpurascens is the principal high-elevation representative of the genus in the eastern Himalaya. Its rhizomes are used in local traditional medicine, and the species is a parent of numerous ornamental Bergenia hybrids. It remains common within its broad range and is not considered threatened.

Description

Betula alnoides Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don is a tall, fast-growing birch of the warm-temperate and subtropical mountains of southern and eastern Asia. Its distribution covers Nepal, northeast India, Bhutan, southern China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, with cultivated and trial occurrences recorded elsewhere. It is a light-demanding, often pioneering tree of moist broad-leaved and mixed montane forests, ravines and disturbed slopes, typically between about 1,000 and 2,800 m. The tree photographed at Yatong-La in Bhutan at 2,800 m in May sits near the upper edge of this band, within the humid mid-montane forest belt where the species frequently colonises gaps and forest margins.

The tree is deciduous and may reach 20–30 m, with smooth, brownish to reddish bark that exfoliates in thin papery sheets and bears conspicuous horizontal lenticels. The leaves are alternate, ovate-lanceolate with a long acuminate apex, doubly serrate margins and several pairs of straight lateral veins. As in all birches the plant is monoecious: the pendulous male catkins elongate at anthesis, while the smaller female catkins develop into slender, drooping, cylindrical infructescences that disintegrate to release small two-winged samaras adapted for wind dispersal.

Betula alnoides is the most important commercial birch of subtropical Asia, valued for its high-quality, reddish, fine-grained timber and increasingly grown in plantations and agroforestry across southern China and adjacent countries. Its rapid early growth and ability to fix sites make it useful in reforestation of degraded montane land. The species belongs to a group of subtropical birches distinct from the better-known temperate white birches, and although widely exploited it remains common and is not regarded as threatened.

Description

Boehmeria ternifolia is a shrubby member of the nettle family ranging through the eastern Himalaya and adjacent regions, recorded from Nepal, India and Bhutan, with GBIF documenting nearly two hundred occurrences across these countries; scattered records from France and the United States represent herbarium and cultivated holdings rather than wild populations. It is a plant of warm-temperate to subtropical broadleaved forest, favouring shaded ravines, streamsides, moist forest margins and roadside banks, typically between roughly 1000 and 2200 m. The specimen illustrated from Lingza in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal at about 1300 m, in May, is representative of these humid mid-elevation forests of the Sikkim-Darjeeling Himalaya, where high rainfall and deep shade favour the soft-leaved, non-stinging habit of the genus.

The plant is an erect shrub or subshrub with woody lower stems and herbaceous, often four-angled younger branches that lack stinging hairs. The leaves are characteristically arranged in whorls of three (occasionally opposite), the basis of the epithet ternifolia; they are ovate to lanceolate, with a long-acuminate apex, serrate margins and a three-veined base, the lamina thin and somewhat rough above. Stipules are present and soon falling. The minute unisexual flowers are borne in slender, interrupted axillary spikes or glomerules, the staminate flowers with a four-lobed perianth and four stamens, the pistillate flowers tubular and enclosing a single ovary with a filiform stigma. The fruit is a small achene tightly invested by the persistent perianth.

Boehmeria is a pantropical and warm-temperate genus best known for ramie (B. nivea), an important bast-fibre crop, and several Himalayan species likewise yield serviceable cordage fibres from their stems. The whorled, ternate leaf arrangement of B. ternifolia is a useful diagnostic character separating it from the many opposite-leaved congeners of the region. As a common, ecologically tolerant forest-edge shrub with a wide elevational and geographic span, it is of no conservation concern, and its abundance along disturbed margins suggests considerable resilience to moderate human impact within the eastern Himalayan forest belt.

Description

Brassaiopsis glomerulata is a small tree or large shrub of the eastern Himalaya and Southeast Asia, distributed from India, Nepal and Bhutan through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia into southern China; its c. 954 georeferenced records make it the most widespread member of its genus. It inhabits evergreen broadleaf forest, secondary woodland, ravines and forest margins, generally between 1000 and 2400 m. The plant photographed at Trashyangtse in eastern Bhutan at 2150 m in May grows in the humid subtropical to warm-temperate forest belt where it occupies the understorey and disturbed forest gaps along streams.

It is an evergreen, sparsely branched tree to c. 8-10 m, the young stems and petioles often armed with short prickles. The leaves are large and palmately compound or deeply palmately lobed, long-petioled, with serrate, acuminate leaflets, clustered toward the branch tips in typical araliaceous fashion. The inflorescence is a large terminal panicle of numerous small umbels, the flowers densely aggregated into globose clusters (hence "glomerulata"). The flowers are small, greenish to whitish, with five petals and five stamens and an inferior ovary crowned by a short style. The fruit is a small, globose, fleshy purple-black drupe containing flattened seeds.

Described originally in Hedera by Blume and transferred to Brassaiopsis by Regel, the species belongs to the Araliaceae, the ivy and ginseng family. Its small drupes are dispersed by frugivorous birds, while the open umbels are visited by generalist insects. The leaves and bark feature in regional ethnomedicine. Widespread and adaptable to disturbed habitats, B. glomerulata is not considered threatened across its broad range.

Description

Brassaiopsis hispida Seem. is a prickly shrub or small tree of the ginseng family ranging through the eastern Himalaya and the Sino-Himalayan region. GBIF records document it in India, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Myanmar, reflecting a distribution centred on the moist eastern Himalayan foothills and adjacent uplands. It occupies humid broad-leaved evergreen and semi-evergreen forest, forest margins and ravines, typically between roughly 1,200 and 2,500 m. The collections illustrated from Chaana in West Bengal at 1,750 m and from the Ringi-Chu in Sikkim at 2,300 m, both flowering in May, are representative of its damp montane forest habitat.

The plant is an armed shrub to small tree, the stems and petioles bearing scattered prickles and a hispid indumentum. The large, long-petiolate leaves are palmately lobed or compound, with the lobes or leaflets coarsely serrate and abruptly acuminate, the surfaces rough-hairy. The inflorescence is a terminal panicle of umbels bearing small, greenish to yellowish, functionally polygamous flowers with five petals and a five-merous ovary. The fruit is a small subglobose drupe with the persistent styles at the apex.

Brassaiopsis is a Palaeotropical Asian genus closely allied to Trevesia and Aralia, distinguished by its prickly habit and lobed leaves. B. hispida is one of several morphologically variable Himalayan species, and the genus has attracted phytochemical interest for its triterpenoid saponins. Though locally common in suitable forest, it is sensitive to habitat clearance in the lower hills.

Description

Bryobium eriaeoides is a small epiphytic orchid formerly placed in the genus Eria, transferred to Bryobium by Clements & Jones based on molecular phylogenetic evidence. The genus Bryobium comprises species previously assigned to Eria section Mycaranthes and allied sections. The species has a disjunct distribution spanning the eastern Himalayas (Bhutan, northeast India) to Southeast Asia and Australasia (Papua New Guinea, Queensland), occurring in montane cloud forests at elevations of 400–2,200 m.

The plant forms small, clustered pseudobulbs 1–3 cm tall on a creeping rhizome, each bearing 2–4 narrowly elliptic leaves 3–8 cm long. The inflorescence arises from the base of the pseudobulb, producing a short raceme of small, densely arranged flowers. Individual flowers are 4–6 mm across, white to pale cream, with a densely pubescent ovary and floral bracts. The lip is trilobed, the mid-lobe fleshy with low keels. Flowering in the Himalayas occurs from April to June.

The taxonomy of Bryobium and closely related genera remains in flux, as ongoing molecular studies continue to refine the classification of the large, polyphyletic former genus Eria. Like all orchids, the species is subject to CITES Appendix II trade regulations.

Description

Bryocarpum himalaicum is the sole species of its genus, a primuloid herb endemic to the eastern Himalaya and recorded from Bhutan, India (Sikkim), Nepal and southern China; GBIF documents around 86 occurrences across this narrow range. It grows in moss-rich, humus-laden ground in cool, shaded forest, among rhododendron and bamboo thickets and on damp, mossy banks in the upper temperate and subalpine zones, typically between about 2700 and 3700 m. The illustrated plant from Phobjika in central Bhutan at 2800 m, flowering in May, is characteristic of these humid, sheltered montane habitats.

It is a small, delicate perennial herb arising from a slender rhizome, forming a rosette of long-petioled, ovate to cordate, crenate leaves with a soft texture. The flowers are solitary and nodding on slender scapes, the corolla being narrowly tubular to bell-shaped and clear yellow, with a slender tube expanding into five spreading lobes, evoking a miniature pendent primrose. A distinctive feature giving the genus its name is the elongate, beaked, septicidal capsule that buries or lowers itself among the moss as it matures before releasing the seeds.

Bryocarpum is a monotypic genus traditionally allied to Primula and the cyclamenoid primulas within Primulaceae, distinguished by its solitary yellow flowers and peculiar elongate fruiting capsule. Its restricted high-Himalayan range and dependence on undisturbed mossy forest floor make it a botanically significant relict of conservation interest, vulnerable to habitat disturbance and changing montane moisture regimes.

Description

Buddleja crispa is a shrub of the dry inner valleys and warm temperate slopes of the Himalaya and adjacent mountains, distributed through China, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Afghanistan and Bhutan, with close to 1100 occurrences in GBIF. It favours open, sunny, often rocky and somewhat arid sites: cliff ledges, river gravels, dry hillsides, roadside banks and the margins of cultivation, generally between about 1000 and 3000 m. The plant photographed at the Doch La in Bhutan at 1400 m in April, flowering in spring on a warm montane pass, is typical of its early-season bloom on exposed, well-drained slopes where its grey-felted foliage withstands strong insolation and seasonal drought.

The species is a much-branched, deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub reaching 1–4 m, densely clothed throughout in white to greyish stellate and woolly tomentum that gives it a markedly silvery appearance. The leaves are opposite, ovate to lanceolate, with crisped, crenate or dentate, often undulate margins (the source of the epithet), and a thick indumentum, particularly beneath. The fragrant flowers are borne in dense, terminal and axillary panicles; each has a tubular corolla that is lilac to pale purple with an orange or yellow throat, the four-lobed limb spreading. The fruit is a small, two-valved septicidal capsule containing numerous minute seeds.

Buddleja, formerly placed in its own family Buddlejaceae or in Loganiaceae, is now treated within an expanded Scrophulariaceae, as on the source page. B. crispa is a variable species across its wide range and has given rise to several named varieties and to horticultural selections valued for their scented, early flowers and tolerance of dry, sunny conditions. The flowers attract butterflies and other insects. The species is widespread, often pioneering on disturbed ground, and is not of conservation concern.

Description

Buddleja paniculata is a shrubby butterfly-bush of the Himalaya and adjacent China, with GBIF occurrences across Nepal, northern India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and southwest China (further codes being cultivated and herbarium records). It favours open, sunny situations on dry slopes, river terraces, cliffs, roadsides and forest margins in the subtropical to warm-temperate zone, mostly between 1,000 and 2,800 m. The illustrated plant was photographed in the Arun Valley of eastern Nepal at about 1,900 m in May, where it flowers in the dry pre-monsoon season on stony, well-drained ground.

The plant is an erect, much-branched shrub 1-3 m tall with quadrangular, stellate-tomentose young branches. The leaves are opposite, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, with a green, somewhat rugose upper surface and a paler, densely stellate-hairy underside, and crenate-serrate margins. The flowers are small and fragrant, crowded into slender, often nodding panicles of cymose clusters; the corolla is tubular with four short lobes, white to pale lilac with an orange or yellow throat, and the calyx is densely tomentose. The fruit is a small, two-valved septicidal capsule releasing numerous minute, narrowly winged seeds dispersed by wind.

The genus Buddleja, formerly placed in its own family Buddlejaceae or in Loganiaceae, is now treated within an enlarged Scrophulariaceae. Buddleja paniculata is among the more cold-tolerant Asian species and an important early-season nectar source for butterflies and other insects. It is widespread, often colonising disturbed and degraded ground, and is not of conservation concern; some forms are grown ornamentally for their scented winter-to-spring bloom.
