Flowers of Sikkim — 350 species from the Sikkim Himalaya in northeast India, a compact yet botanically extraordinary region that climbs from subtropical valleys to the alpine zone beneath Kangchenjunga. Sikkim is a classic centre of Himalayan plant diversity, celebrated for its rhododendrons, primulas, orchids and gentians. Each entry provides a botanical description, distribution, habitat and flowering season with the original field photograph.

Description

Nannoglottis hookeri is a Himalayan and Sino-Himalayan species recorded from Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, India and south-western China, GBIF logging about 145 occurrences across this arc. It inhabits a notably broad altitudinal span, from warm-temperate forest understorey and shrubby slopes to high subalpine and alpine meadows. The cited gatherings illustrate this amplitude: Wangdi in Bhutan at only 1400 m in October, Tanghu in Sikkim near 4000 m in June, and the Chele-La pass at around 3500 m in June. Such occurrence in moist, partly shaded ground, on humus-rich soils among rocks and along forest margins, characterises the species through the Eastern Himalayan ranges.

It is a perennial herb growing from a stout woody rhizome and producing erect, leafy, glandular-pubescent stems. The leaves are alternate, the lower ones petiolate with ovate to elliptic, coarsely toothed blades, becoming sessile and amplexicaul above; both surfaces bear scattered hairs. The capitula are radiate and arranged in a loose terminal corymb; the involucre is hemispheric with subequal, herbaceous phyllaries in few rows. Ray florets are yellow, ligulate and female, while the disc florets are tubular, yellow and bisexual. The cypselae are oblong and ribbed, surmounted by a pappus of slender barbellate bristles, an arrangement linking the genus to the Astereae.

Nannoglottis (Astereae) is a small Sino-Himalayan genus of fewer than a dozen species, distinguished by its radiate heads and montane forest ecology, and molecular work places it near the base of the tribe, making it of phylogenetic interest. Named for J. D. Hooker, N. hookeri is treated as an accepted species. Its dependence on cool, moist montane habitat and relatively narrow distribution warrant attention, though no formal threat status has been assigned; populations appear stable where forest cover persists.

Description

Nardostachys jatamansi, the source of the aromatic drug spikenard, is an alpine herb of the high Himalaya and the Tibetan plateau margins. GBIF records confirm its native distribution across China, Nepal, India, Bhutan and Myanmar, with cultivated or processed material recorded from several other countries, totalling around 1110 occurrences. It grows on open alpine meadows, rocky slopes, grassy ledges and stable scree, generally between about 3000 and 5000 m, in the cool, summer-moist conditions of the high mountains. The photographed collections span its range and altitude well, from the Chele-La in Bhutan at 3850 m and Dzongri in Sikkim at 4000 m to Loccu in Nepal at 3155 m and the Baga-La-Phedi in West Nepal at 4200 m, recorded from May to August during the alpine flowering season.

It is a small, erect perennial herb arising from a stout, woody, aromatic rhizome densely clothed in the fibrous remains of old leaf-bases. The leaves are mostly basal, elongate-spathulate to oblong, entire and somewhat fleshy. The flowering stem bears a compact terminal cyme or head of small flowers; each has a campanulate, pink to pale rose corolla with five lobes, four stamens and an inferior ovary. The fruit is a small, one-seeded achene crowned by the persistent calyx.

Nardostachys is here placed in the Caprifoliaceae, into which the former valerian family Valerianaceae is now subsumed. The species is of great economic and cultural importance, its fragrant rhizome being the jatamansi or spikenard of ancient commerce, still harvested for essential oils, perfumery and traditional medicine. Intensive wild collection coupled with its restricted alpine habitat has led to serious population decline, and the species is assessed as Critically Endangered and listed under CITES Appendix II.

Description

Neohymenopogon parasiticus is an epiphytic shrub of the eastern Himalaya and adjacent Sino-Himalayan and Indochinese mountains, distributed through China, Nepal, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan and Vietnam (gbif_countries: CN, NP, IN, TH, MM, BT, VN, ZZ, GB, PG), with some 438 GBIF occurrences. Despite the epithet it is not truly parasitic but grows perched on the trunks and mossy branches of trees in humid, mid-elevation broadleaved and mixed forest, occasionally also on rocks. The illustrated collections range from above Yoksam in Sikkim at about 1860 m up to Wangdi Phoang and Tumching-La in Bhutan at around 2000–2300 m, recorded in the late-monsoon to autumn months, reflecting its preference for moist, cloud-bathed submontane forest.

The plant is a glabrous to finely hairy epiphytic shrub with opposite, elliptic to obovate leaves clustered toward the branch tips, the stipules interpetiolar as in Rubiaceae. The flowers are borne in terminal cymose clusters and are showy by virtue of enlarged, white, petaloid calyx-lobes (calycophylls) that subtend the inflorescence and aid pollinator attraction, surrounding tubular corollas. The fruit is a ribbed, dehiscent capsule releasing many small, winged seeds suited to wind dispersal among the canopy.

Neohymenopogon was segregated from Hymenopogon to accommodate this distinctive Himalayan epiphytic lineage, and the species is placed in the madder family among the calycophyll-bearing Rubiaceae that mimic the petaloid bracts of Mussaenda and its allies. As an epiphyte dependent on intact, humid forest canopy, it is sensitive to deforestation, though it remains locally frequent across its range and is not currently of conservation concern.

Description

Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora is an alpine herb of the central and eastern Himalaya, ranging through Nepal, Bhutan, northern India and south-western China (Tibet), the roughly 106 GBIF records concentrating along this high-mountain belt with cultivated and herbarium material accounting for the United States occurrences. In GBIF the name is treated as a synonym, with Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora cited as the accepted name. It grows on open alpine slopes, moist rocky meadows, screes and humus-rich crevices, typically between 3500 and 4800 m. The photographed plant from Lada-La in Sikkim at 3600 m in June reflects its early-summer flowering on damp, high-alpine ground.

It is a low, creeping perennial herb spreading by a stout, bitter, woody rhizome that roots at the nodes and bears persistent leaf remains. The leaves are mostly basal, spathulate to oblong-obovate, with a crenate-serrate margin, narrowed to a winged base. From the rosette arises a short, erect scape terminating in a dense, cylindrical, spike-like raceme of small flowers; the corolla is dark bluish-purple to violet, with conspicuously exserted stamens. The fruit is a small ovoid capsule containing numerous minute seeds.

The monotypic genus Neopicrorhiza was segregated from Picrorhiza and, following molecular work, is now placed in the Plantaginaceae (formerly within Scrophulariaceae). The rhizome, known in trade as kutki, is intensely bitter and is among the most heavily harvested Himalayan medicinal plants, used for hepatic and febrile complaints. Sustained wild collection has caused marked population decline, and the species is regarded as threatened and is subject to harvesting controls and cultivation initiatives across its range.

Description

Paris mairei is a rhizomatous woodland herb of the Sino-Himalayan region, distributed across SW China, Nepal, NE India and Bhutan, with GBIF documenting around 269 records. It is a plant of shaded, humus-rich forest, growing in moist broadleaved and coniferous woodland, thickets and shady ravines of the temperate zone. The photographed populations at Sambon in the Sikkim–West Bengal hills (1,800 m, April) and at Bagong Khola in Nepal (2,700 m, May) reflect its altitudinal span from the warm temperate to the upper temperate forest belt, where it flowers in spring as the canopy leafs out.

It is an erect perennial arising from a creeping, knotty rhizome, bearing a single terminal whorl of stalkless or shortly petiolate, ovate to lanceolate, net-veined leaves. From the centre of the whorl rises a solitary, long-pedicellate flower with the parts in the characteristic Paris arrangement: a whorl of green, leaf-like outer perianth segments (sepals), filiform or narrowly linear inner segments (petals), prominent stamens with the connective often produced beyond the anther, and a central ovary crowned by spreading stigmas. The fruit is a capsule that splits to expose seeds with a coloured fleshy aril.

The genus Paris (now placed in Melanthiaceae rather than the former Trilliaceae) is renowned for its steroidal saponins, several Asian species being important in traditional Chinese medicine, which has driven heavy wild collection and conservation concern in parts of the range. The single leaf whorl and solitary, spider-like flower make the genus instantly recognisable, while the contrast between broad sepaloid and thread-like petaloid segments is diagnostic at species level. P. mairei is distinguished within the genus by its leaf and floral proportions and stamen connective form.

Description

Parnassia nubicola Wall. ex Royle is a perennial herb of moist alpine habitats distributed along the Himalaya and into adjoining Central Asia, recorded from China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bhutan, with around 182 georeferenced occurrences clustered in the high Sino-Himalayan ranges. It favours wet alpine meadows, marshy turf, seepage slopes, streamsides and the moist margins of snowmelt flushes, where soils remain saturated through the growing season. The photographed plants from Dzongri in Sikkim at about 4,200 m in August and from the Shele-La in Bhutan at about 4,000 m in September show its preference for the upper subalpine to alpine zone, where it flowers in late summer.

It grows from a short rhizome as a rosette of long-petioled basal leaves with ovate to cordate, entire blades. The flowering stems are erect and bear usually a single clasping, sessile cauline leaf below the solitary terminal flower. Each flower has five green sepals and five white petals conspicuously veined with green or yellowish lines. Between the fertile stamens lie five fringed staminodes divided into numerous gland-tipped filaments, a hallmark of the genus; the superior ovary ripens into a capsule splitting into four valves to release many small seeds.

The family attribution to Celastraceae follows recent molecular classifications, in which Parnassia (formerly placed in Saxifragaceae or its own Parnassiaceae) is treated within an expanded Celastraceae. The conspicuous nectar-secreting staminodes are associated with generalist insect pollination. Widespread and locally common across its broad range, P. nubicola is not considered threatened, though wetland alpine populations are sensitive to drainage, trampling and grazing.

Description

Parnassia pusilla is a diminutive grass-of-Parnassus distributed through the central and eastern Himalaya, recorded from China, Nepal, India, Bhutan and Myanmar and represented by some 177 georeferenced occurrences. It is a plant of cold, wet, open high-elevation ground, characteristically inhabiting alpine seepages, marshy meadows, dripping rock ledges and the gravelly margins of snowmelt streams where the substrate remains saturated through summer. The specimen photographed below Dzongri in Sikkim at about 3950 m in August illustrates its strong affinity for the upper alpine flush zone, where it flowers during the brief monsoon-fed growing season among low cushion vegetation and short turf.

It is a small, glabrous perennial herb arising from a short rootstock, forming a basal rosette from which slender, single-flowered scapes emerge. The basal leaves are long-petiolate with ovate to cordate blades, while each flowering stem bears a single sessile, clasping cauline leaf below the flower. The solitary flower is regular and pentamerous, with five free white petals that are conspicuously veined. Characteristic of the genus, alternating with the fertile stamens are five fringed staminodes, each dissected into gland-tipped filaments that serve as pseudonectaries to attract pollinators. The superior ovary develops into a capsule that splits to release numerous small seeds.

Despite its placement here under Celastraceae, Parnassia is morphologically distinctive, and the family circumscription reflects modern molecular treatments that subsume the former Parnassiaceae within an enlarged Celastraceae. The elaborate gland-tipped staminodes are a notable adaptation for insect pollination, offering visual and possibly olfactory rewards without true nectar. As a specialist of high-altitude wetlands, P. pusilla is sensitive to drainage, trampling by livestock and the desiccation of alpine seeps, so it serves as a useful indicator of intact high-mountain mire habitat.

Paroxygraphis sikkimensis is a rare alpine member of the buttercup family endemic to the Eastern Himalaya, recorded from Nepal, Sikkim and adjacent India, Bhutan and southern Tibet (China), with GBIF documenting only 24 occurrences across NP, IN, BT and CN. It inhabits open alpine turf, moist meadows and damp gravelly slopes near the upper limit of vegetation, generally between about 3800 and 4500 m. The photographed plant was found in Bhutan near Jimilangtso (Jimilang Tsho) at around 4100 m, flowering in June at the start of the brief alpine growing season.

The plant is a small, low perennial herb forming a basal rosette of leaves from a slender rootstock, with short, few-flowered stems. The leaves are simple, spathulate to obovate, entire or shallowly toothed toward the apex, and somewhat fleshy. The flowers are solitary or few, with a calyx of sepals and a corolla of small white to yellowish petals each bearing a basal nectary, surrounding numerous free stamens and an apocarpous gynoecium of many separate carpels. The fruit is a head of achenes, each tipped with a short style, in the manner of the closely allied genus Ranunculus.

Paroxygraphis is a small, segregate genus erected by W.W. Smith and traditionally placed near Oxygraphis and Ranunculus within the Ranunculeae; molecular studies have prompted discussion of its relationships and possible inclusion in a broadly circumscribed Ranunculus. Its very restricted range, low number of recorded occurrences and specialised high-alpine habitat make P. sikkimensis a taxon of biogeographic interest and potential conservation concern, though it has not been formally assessed.

Description

Pedicularis clarkei is a hemiparasitic perennial lousewort of the eastern Himalaya, distributed through Nepal, China, India and Bhutan, with about 127 documented records and scattered cultivated or vouchered occurrences in France and Spain. It is an alpine plant of open meadows, moist turf, rocky slopes and snow-flush communities, growing predominantly between 3500 and 4500 m. The illustrated material was collected at Dzongri in Sikkim at 3920 m in August, a classic high-alpine ridge locality where the species flowers at the height of the short growing season.

As a root-hemiparasite the plant attaches to neighbouring hosts by haustoria while retaining green, photosynthetic foliage. It forms low tufted stems bearing alternate, pinnately divided leaves whose segments are toothed or further lobed. The flowers are crowded in terminal leafy-bracted spikes; the calyx is tubular and cleft, and the strongly zygomorphic corolla, pink to rose-purple, has a curved tube and a beaked, hooded galea (the upper lip) opposed by a broad three-lobed lower lip that serves as a landing platform. The four didynamous stamens are enclosed within the galea, and the fruit is an oblique, flattened capsule containing few seeds.

Named in honour of the botanist C.B. Clarke, the species belongs to the immensely diverse Sino-Himalayan radiation of Pedicularis, now placed in Orobanchaceae following molecular reclassification from the Scrophulariaceae. Its tubular, beaked corolla is adapted to pollination by long-tongued bumblebees active in the cool alpine climate. Though geographically restricted to high elevations, it is locally frequent within suitable habitat and is not presently regarded as threatened.

Description

Pedicularis diffusa is a hemiparasitic alpine herb of the eastern Himalaya and adjacent Tibetan region, recorded from China, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Myanmar and Mongolia, with about 92 occurrences in GBIF. It inhabits subalpine and alpine meadows, open grassy slopes, scrub and the margins of forest, typically between about 3000 and 4500 m. The photographed populations come from Sikkim, at Lachung (3000 m, June) and at the high alpine site of Dzongri (4100-4200 m, August), spanning the species' altitudinal range and flowering from early summer into the late monsoon at the higher stations.

The plant forms loose clumps from a fibrous or somewhat thickened rootstock, with ascending to diffusely spreading stems, the habit reflected in the epithet diffusa. The leaves are pinnately divided into oblong, toothed segments and are arranged along the stems as well as basally. The flowers are borne in lax, leafy, often elongate and interrupted racemes; the corolla is pink to purplish-red, two-lipped, with a galea (hooded upper lip) and a broad three-lobed lower lip, the galea typically beaked or toothed at its apex. The fruit is an oblique, laterally compressed capsule containing few seeds.

Like all Pedicularis, the species is a root hemiparasite, photosynthetic but tapping neighbouring plants via haustoria for water and minerals, an adaptation well suited to nutrient-poor alpine turf. The genus is extraordinarily diverse in the Sino-Himalayan mountains, and corolla architecture, particularly the form of the galea and beak, underpins species delimitation. Its tubular two-lipped flowers are adapted to bumblebee pollination. Restricted alpine specialists of this kind are potentially sensitive to climate warming and grazing pressure on high pastures.
